Difference between Replace and Reissue

Replace Card

Replacing a card means to generate a net-new card for an account with a new cardId. When replacing a card (see Replace Card), a new PAN, CVV, expiry, and emboss record are generated. The original card's status will be set to closed_ls once replaced.

To activate a replaced card, use the Activate Card endpoint.

Special Note for Digital-First Cards

Digital-First card replacements are active upon creation. To protect the card in transit, physical transactions will automatically be blocked for the replacement Digital-First card (see Account and Card Features for details on card blocks). This block will overwrite any existing card blocks that were set viaEdit Account Features.

Please note that Virtual-Only cards are also active upon creation once reissued (see Card Types for more details).

📘

Mobile Wallets

If a lost or stolen card was in a mobile wallet, the replacement card does not automatically replace the card in the wallet. Either the cardholder must manually provision the replacement card to the wallet or you can call the Provision Mobile Wallet endpoint.

Reissue Card

Reissuing a card generates a new version of an existing card. This newly generated version retains the same PAN and Card ID (CAD). The card receives a new expiry date and CVV, and a new emboss record is created.

Reissued Physical-Only and Digital-First cards are not active upon creation. They must be activated via Activate Card before they can be used. No card blocks are set when a Digital-First card is reissued. See Activating Cards for more info.

📘

Reissuing Virtual-Only Cards

Virtual-Only cards cannot be reissued. Please use the Replace Card endpoint instead for reissuing Virtual-Only cards.

When to Replace Vs. Reissue

Replacing Cards

Cards are usually replaced due to being lost, stolen, or compromised. Generating a new card is the safest way to protect against fraud and unauthorized usage.

Reissuing Cards

Cards are usually reissued when the physical card is damaged or when a card is about to expire (if your program does not have an auto-reissue configuration for expired cards).
